Why the times-seven rule gets it wrong
I used to multiply by seven too. Everyone did. The trouble is that pets do not age at a steady speed, so no single multiplier can be right at every age.
Think about it. A 1-year-old dog is fully grown and can have puppies of its own. Does that sound like a 7-year-old child? Of course not. It sounds like a teenager, and that is roughly where the real number lands: about 15 human years at age one. Honestly, I think the old rule survived because it is easy, not because it is right.
The dog math that actually works
The chart vets commonly use is simple. Year one counts as 15 human years. Year two adds 9, taking you to 24. After that, each dog year adds 4 human years for a small dog (under 20 lb), 5 for medium (20 to 50 lb), 6 for large (51 to 90 lb), and 7 for giant (over 90 lb).
Take Milo, a 6-year-old Labrador. Year one gives 15, year two takes it to 24, and the four years after that add 6 each: 48 human years. Times-seven would have said 42. At the ends of the scale the gap gets silly: a 12-year-old Chihuahua is about 64, while a 12-year-old Great Dane is near 94.
When I tested this with our age calculator, the part people trip over is the starting age. A dog adopted as "about six" might really be six years and seven months, and those months matter near a senior threshold.

Cats play by a simpler rule
Cats are a relief after dogs, because size barely matters for them. So cats get one chart: 15 for the first year, 9 for the second, then about 4 per year after that.
That makes a 5-year-old cat about 36 in human years, and a 9-year-old cat about 52. A 15-year-old cat? Around 76. If you have ever lived with one, that number will feel right. They sleep more and jump less.
One nudge: indoor cats tend to live longer than outdoor cats, so if yours goes outdoors, count it as a little older than the chart says.
Work it out in two minutes
Step 1: Get the exact age. Open our age calculator and enter your pet's birth date. When I ran a test date through it, a dog born on March 15, 2020 came out at 6 years, 7 months, and 15 days on October 30, 2026. If you only know an adoption year, use your best estimate and tell your vet.
Step 2: Convert it. For a dog, start at 15, add 9 for year two, then add 4, 5, 6, or 7 per year depending on adult size. For a cat, start at 15, add 9, then add 4 per year. Round it off. Nobody needs decimals here.
Step 3: Name the stage. Up to 1 is puppy or kitten, 2 to 6 is young adult, 7 to 10 is mature adult, and beyond that is senior, with big dogs hitting senior years earlier. That stage is what changes decisions. Our guide to how old you are in years, months, and days uses the same calculator, and your age in total days is a fun comparison.
What to change once you know the number
A number on its own is trivia. Here is what it should change.
Vet visits. Adults usually do fine on a yearly checkup, but seniors benefit from twice-yearly visits. If your big dog just crossed into senior territory at 7, that is the moment to ask about senior bloodwork, not at 12.
Food and weight. Senior pets often need fewer calories, and extra weight hits older joints hard. A dog that carried an extra couple of pounds happily at 3 will feel them at 10.
Exercise. Seniors still need to move, just differently: shorter, gentler, more frequent walks beat one heroic weekend hike. Play still matters for a 12-year-old cat too, just five minutes with a feather toy instead of a midnight sprint.
None of this replaces your vet, and the chart is an estimate, not a diagnosis. But it beats guessing. So grab your pet's birth date, run it through the age calculator, and do the conversion. Two minutes, one number, and a much clearer idea of where your pet actually is in life.
Frequently asked questions
How old is a 1-year-old dog in human years?
About 15 human years. A 1-year-old dog is already fully grown and sexually mature, which is why the old times-seven answer of 7 is so far off.
How old is a 5-year-old dog in human years?
It depends on size: about 36 for a small dog, 39 for medium, 42 for large, and 45 for a giant breed.
How old is a 5-year-old cat in human years?
About 36 human years. Cats count 15 for the first year, 9 for the second, then about 4 per year after that, and size matters much less than it does for dogs.
When is a dog considered a senior?
Giant breeds as early as 5 or 6, large dogs around 7 or 8, medium dogs around 9 or 10, and small dogs around 11 or 12.
